The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5
This verse has different versions, mainly the word “overcome” replaced with: comprehended, apprehended, overtake, mastered, extinguished, etc. “Overcome” is the word it had in the verse when I first read it, but even though they are different words the message is clear, the darkness has not conquered the light.
This is one of my favorite bible quotes. You can find it in the Gospel of John. It is only a few words but in those few words it packs a punch. The way I see it, it gives me a message of hope. No matter how dark it gets it will never put out the light. The light and darkness can be metaphors for many things, Good vs. Evil for example. A personal interpretation for me is that the darkness is all the regrets, bad choices made, stress, anxieties, and worries I have in my life.
This darkness can be so overwhelming. Whether I am dwelling in the past, worried about the future, or feeling down in the present, I can’t let the darkness swallow me up!
I have two interpretations of the this verse. Both mean a lot to me and is how I have interpreted my favorite bible verse. The first is the Candle Metaphor. I came up with it when I first read it. The second metaphor I came up with when I did a bit of research on it and the bible’s meaning of the word “light”.
The Candle Metaphor
When I read the quote, my mind painted a visual metaphor to understand it. I thought about a single candle being lit in a dark room. That small single flame burned on and on, surrounded immensely by the darkness. But no matter how much darkness there was, it couldn’t extinguish that small single flame on that candle. The amount of confidence you have in that candle lighting up in the darkness, should be the same amount of faith you must have that everything will be alright.
You are the Light Metaphor
After doing some research, I found that Jesus referred to himself and his disciples as the light of the world. I am the light. In your life, you are the light, but you are the light that cannot be extinguished. The darkness is not tougher than you, and don’t let it trick you into thinking that is the case, because it is not. The darkness, the problems, the pressure, and the stress can seem so vast and so overpowering, but think of a candle light that’s lit in front of you. That one little candle stands tall doing what it does best amongst the seemingly vast darkness, it shares is light. And so should you share yours. You have a light, a passion inside of you that burns on, but it can only be extinguished if you choose it because it is your light, it belongs to you, it does not belong to the darkness.
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
